JORDI CLOS
President of Derby Hotels Collection
In addition to being a hotelier, Jordi Clos is an Egyptologist, collector and art patron. He chairs the Clos Archaeological Foundation and the Egyptian Museum of Barcelona, the largest private collection of Egyptian art in Europe on public display, and has been financing archaeological excavations in Egypt for more than twenty years.
The Hotel Astoria houses two great treasures inside: a collection of poster art from the early 20th century and a museum room dedicated to the Catalan artist Ricard Opisso.
The Opisso Museum room displays more than three hundred works by the illustrator Ricard Opisso (1880-1966). A journey through the life of this Catalan artist from the first half of the 20th century. From his beginnings as Gaudí's apprentice and regular visitor to the artists' and bohemians' tavern Els Quatre Gats in Barcelona and his encounters with Picasso; his time in Paris, where he had the opportunity to let his more insinuating side flow freely and publish in French humour magazines; and his evolution after the Spanish Civil War, when he abandoned social-critical drawing to focus on a gentler personal projection in keeping with his new clientele.
Modernist and Art Nouveau advertising-themed posters decorate the walls of the restaurant and other areas of the hotel. The hotel also displays posters advertising popular festivals and major events in the city of Barcelona, such as the Universal Exhibition of 1929.
