JORDI CLOS

President of Derby Hotels Collection

In addition to his career in hospitality, Jordi Clos is an Egyptologist, art collector, and patron of the arts. He is the president of the Clos Archaeological Foundation and the Egyptian Museum of Barcelona, home to the largest private collection of Egyptian art in Europe open to the public. He has been funding archaeological excavations in Egypt for over twenty years.

The Hotel Astoria houses two great treasures within: a collection of posters from the early 20th century and a museum room dedicated to the Catalan artist Ricard Opisso.

The Opisso Museum displays over four hundred works by the illustrator Ricard Opisso (1880-1966). This exhibition traces the life of this prominent Catalan artist from the first half of the 20th century. From his beginnings as a Gaudí apprentice and regular visitor of the bohemian artist tavern Els Quatre Gats in Barcelona, to his encounters with Picasso. It also showcases his period in Paris, where he freely expressed his more suggestive side and published in French humor magazines; as well as his post-Civil War evolution, when he left critical-social drawing behind to focus on a gentler style suited to his new clientele.

Posters by Modernist and Art Nouveau artists with advertising themes decorate the walls of the restaurant and other hotel areas. Additionally, posters promoting popular festivals and major Barcelona events, such as the 1929 Universal Exhibition, are on display.
